Biofilms
- Biofilm almost always consists of rich mixtures of many species of bacteria, as well as fungi, algae, yeasts, protozoa, other microorganisms, debris, and corrosion products.
- Biofilm microorganisms will often stick together and also to a surface.
- The cells are often embedded in a self-produced matrix of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) which is also referred to as slime.
- Biofilms are involved in a wide variety of microbial infections that involve urinary tract infections, middle ear infections and a whole variety of other conditions.
